Jennifer Brinkmeyer, Iowa City High School, Iowa City, IA
I teach Reading Strategies, Composition, and English 9 at Iowa City High School and recently celebrated 10,000 hours in the classroom (about 7 and a half years).
I graduated from the University of Iowa in 2006 with a B.A. in English and from Graceland University in 2011 with an M.A. in Collaborative Teaching and Learning. My thesis was on the value of teachers writing with their students in the classroom, heavily inspired by Penny Kittle's Write Beside Them. I will earn my Ed. S. in Literacy Education Leadership from Drake University in May 2015.
The Book Love Foundation grant in 2013 was the most significant gift toward my professional development that I have ever received. In terms of reading diets, I have moved student-readers from fasting to hungry, hungry to sweet tooth, and sweet tooth to balanced. Students read with more excitement, more variety, and more sustainability than ever before in my classroom. Thanks, Book Love!
