Whether sailing between northeast harbors, teaching in a classroom, marketing and selling educational professional development resources, or setting the course for Heinemann's future, Lesa Scott understands the importance of teamwork.

One of the management experiences she values most is once having coached a volleyball team to a state championship. "Coaching a winning team is all about having the right person in the best position to optimize everyone's contributions and ensure success." 

She took the helm at Heinemann in January, 2001, after thirty years in education and educational publishing. A former science, social studies, and health teacher, she left the classroom to market and sell textbooks for Scott Foresman and McDougal Littell. The experience she gained talking to educators across the country and articulating their needs to publishers led her to executive leadership positions.

Before joining Heinemann, she helped conceptualize literacy programs as vice president of marketing and sales for Scott Foresman and vice president of marketing and sales for Scholastic Education. Lesa sees quality education as key to a strong democracy: "There is nothing more powerful than a knowledgeable population that recognizes the importance of protecting the principles of democracy." She views the Heinemann family—its dynamic authors and skilled staff—as being uniquely positioned to continue the Heinemann tradition of positively influencing education. "There is no substitute for quality education, instruction, and professional development in producing lifelong learners who think critically about life."
